ABILITIES

Berserk

ACTION ABILITY

Berserk is an action ability because you actually select it during battle, but it's effects are very similar to those of the characteristic abilities.  When you select it during battles it triggers a passive, non-negatable buff to your character's Strength (STR), Speed (SPD), and also increases hit points (HP).  In an attempt to balance this extremely powerful ability, your Intelligence (INT) and DF (overall defense) are negatively affected.  As you'll soon see, the pros far outweigh the cons.

Check the strategy guide for a detailed breakdown of the core stats, but here's a quick rundown of how this ability affects a unit:

  • Berserk boosts your STR which, for melee units, is an absolute must if you want your units to connect with anything during battle.  It ,along with DEX, plays a major role in the mechanics of things.

  • SPD is also increased which allows the unit to perform any chosen action that much faster.  A unit with 60 SPD is, naturally, going to perform an action before a unit with less.  Berserk 5 grants +35 SPD which, paired with other things equipped or purchased, can make any unit wickedly fast...easily faster than your enemy.

  • You can always use HP, the more the better.  This ability can boost overall HP by 35.

  • All units that get the option of Berserk are melee units.  Melee units do not need INT to begin with, so the loss in INT is irrelevant.  The only melee unit which it would affect, possibly, is your leader.  INT, on a squad leader, boosts the battle order Target One's success rate.

  • DF is your defense factor, and determines how easily your unit is hit.

As mentioned above, units which have access to Berserk are melee units.  If you have your unit doing any sort of skill towards the other squad, STR is a must-have stat.  STR affects AF greatly and the more, the merrier.  If maxed out, Berserk can grant an additional 35 STR.  This buff alone would be one of the better abilities in the game, but you're also getting equal amounts of SPD and HP!.  So now you don't only have an efficient attacking unit, but a lightning fast one.

That being said, you should have your mind made up already, but there's more.  The reason Berserk is one of the best, if not THE best, actions is how it helps to optimize your AP.  The name of the game is PV/AP efficiency and Berserk can positively affect both..  When spending your AP, you'll notice core stats come in bundles of five for each level.  The SPD and STR alone would cost you 14 AP, and Berserk 5 only costs FIVE TOTAL AP.  Imagine all the things you could do with nine extra AP.  You could purchase another action ability, or turn any unit into a bonafide killing machine with massive amounts of core stats.

Pairing the ability with stat upgrades can easily make an uncommon unit as effective as a rare, or even heroic, unit giving you a big advantage.  If you want a unit strictly for basic attack you would want to max out STR and DEX, and adjust SPD accordingly.  A level 20 Ursa Major with these stats maxed out (no shape-shift) comes to 100 STR, 60 SPD, 224 HP.  This would come at a cost of 16 AP and 412 PV (unequipped).  You could reach these stats easily on an uncommon Ursa Crusher by purchasing Berserk 5 alone.  Five AP for Berserk 5 would net you 110 STR,61 SPD, 269 HP and you could beef him up even further by purchasing more of each.  A level 20 Crusher is only 201 PV for an equally effective unit.  Pretty easily decision eh?

Pretty easy indeed!  These stats do, however, come at a price.  It decreases a unit's INT and DF.  As mentioned above, the INT loss is nothing to worry about.  The disappearing DF is something to keep in mind.  Berserk turns any melee unit into an efficient offensive terror, but the -DF will make them much easier to kill.  Early levels of Berserk decrease your DF considerably, but the debuff decreases with each level purchased.  At Berserk 5 it's only -12 DF.  With all the AP you've saved you could just purchase more CON and WIL, or even max out another armor to make up for the DF loss.  It may be best to hold off actually using Berserk until you get it to Berserk 3 or so.  Planning ahead will pay off in the long-run.

Keep in mind Berserk is an action ability for a reason. Yes, it grants a passive stat boost, but you have to actually select it in battle.  Your stats will only be boosted if you get the ability off before dying.  If you select it, and a faster unit has killed your berserker, you have just thrown five AP out of the window.  There's only one charge so use it wisely.

Be sure to test it out to see if it fits into your scheme of things.  Some of these equipments listed here can grant Berserk 5 and are pretty easy to find around town.  It's a nice tester before you spend any AP on it.  Legion Augmenteds also have it standard at level 1.
